CAN OLD DOGS LEARN NEW TRICKS?
CAN OLD DOGS LEARN NEW TRICKS?
26 Mar 2025
Like humans, dogs experience a gradual decline in their learning ability as they get older. This means they will probably take a bit longer to learn something than when they were a pup. But that’s no reason to stop teaching them new tricks!
Studies show that regular learning activities help older dogs stay sharp and keep their brains going as they age. What are some of the things you could try with your dog?
If they’re physically well, try a new hobby, such as Scentwork or Rally-O. You can start as a complete beginner and progress through the levels together with your dog.
If your dog is affected by a physical condition, such as arthritis or going blind, there’s still plenty of activities they can do. Scatter some of their favourite treats around the garden and if your dog does well, make it more complicated next time by putting the treats a little bit higher, or placing a cardboard box over them. If your dog is struggling to get the idea, help them out and praise them when they finally get it.
